In Verizon’s continued support of Black History Month, they have teamed with United Negro College Fund to give students a chance to further their education. Applicants are required to write an essay about how the evolution of wireless technology has changed the world we live in, and they can win a scholarship award toward their college tuition.

Thirty-seven eligible students will be selected for the 2010-2011 academic year and will receive a scholarship of up to $5,000 each. Select students will also receive a personal technology make-over including an HP Netbook, a Motorola DROID cell phone and/or Verizon Wireless gift cards.

The deadline for the scholarship is April 15, 2010.

The Employment Opportunities Grant Program released an RFA earlier this week seeking qualified applicants. The purpose of the EOGP is to expand the number of people from historically underrepresented populations who enter and complete building trades apprenticeship programs and ultimately attain journey-level status within building trades unions.

In an effort to ensure that the RFA reaches a broad range of communities throughout the state, I am asking that you publicize the RFA to local organizations, community-based groups, and businesses throughout your regions.

Due to circumstances beyond our control the deadline for the Employment Opportunities Grant Program (EOGP) RFA will be extended an additional 21 days to Thursday, March 11, 2010.  If you have already submitted an application, you have the option of withdrawing it and resubmitting it by the new deadline. Award notifications will now be issued by Friday, April 2^nd.

On Sunday, February 14th, the Springfield Branch NAACP will host it’s 89th annual Lincoln/Douglass Banquet at the Springfield Hilton Hotel. Tickets are
